Does NNIRR provide services to
immigrants and refugees? NNIRR is a national alliance of
organizations and individuals working to build a stronger
movement for immigrant and refugee rights. Although our national
office does not provide direct services to immigrants seeking
assistance or engage in local organizing campaigns, we coordinate
communication and strategy building among over 200 local groups,
whose programs range from legal assistance to community education
and organizing.
Where can I go if I have a question
about my immigration situation? While NNIRR's national office
cannot respond to requests regarding individual immigration
cases, a number of our member organizations and affiliates
provide legal services. Please see the need immigration
assistance section of our website.
Where is NNIRR located? Our
national office is located in the Chinatown section of Oakland,
California, but our presence as a network extends across the U.S.
and internationally. Our member organizations are located in over
30 states, and we are linked to migrants rights organizations in
Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America.
What is unique about NNIRR's
role in the immigrant rights movement? We help to rethink
questions about immigration and the way it is portrayed by the
media and policymakers. We work to provide political and economic
context and to put a human face on the issue. Our campaigns and
publications help to bring together local grassroots groups
across the U.S. We address migration as it relates to global
economic forces, changing demographics, and race relations. Our
work provides an alternative analysis that emphasizes human
dignity and social justice.
What role does NNIRR play with
the media? NNIRR's national office anchors media work for a
number of member organizations that do not have the resources or
capacity to do so on their own. NNIRR works to generate coverage
of member organizations and their activities, and to ensure that
the voices of immigrants themselves -- not just of policymakers
-- are featured in the press. Through our campaigns, we provide
trainings and guidance to enhance local voices in the media. For
more, see media information.
How is NNIRR funded?
NNIRR's work is fueled by membership fees, contributions from
concerned individuals, sales of our publications and materials,
and the support of various foundations. Our funders include the
Unitarian Universalist Veatch program at Shelter Rock, the Boehm
Foundation, Ford Foundation, the Grousbeck Family Foundation, and
the Ben and Jerry's Foundation, among others. Your membership
contributions and donations help to sustain our work.
