We know -- it's hard to believe that it's been 30 years since we were founded in 1986 -- the same year that the last major immigration reform bill -- the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) -- was passed. NNIRR founders, a nationwide alliance of diverse immigrant community organizations, labor, faith, civil rights groups and other advocates and activists, had come together to protest the "Simpson-Mazzoli" bill, which eventually passed as IRCA. While we were glad to see the inclusion of legalization for the undocumented, IRCA had spurred the guest worker and core enforcement programs that have plagued our movement for decades.

And here we are, 30 years later -- certainly a much larger immigrant rights movement -- but with the same concerns for the rights of migrants and refugees, and pushing back against racism, xenophobia, and punitive and abusive immigration enforcement policies. We're part of a much bigger and stronger movement for migrant rights worldwide, and NNIRR is proud to have played an active part in building up this vital movement. Here and around the world, we're still tearing down walls, lifting up justice!
