New Short Video on Global Migrant Crisis Premieres at Netroots Nation

LATEST NEWS

Phoenix AZ: Thursday July 16: At Netroots Nation (netrootsnation.org) on July 16, filmmaker Marc Silver (@marcsilverms, “Who is Dayani Cristal?”, “3 ½ Minutes”) and producer Lina Srivastava (@lksriv) will present the world premiere of a new short video, “A Death You Could Die By,” which draws attention to the current worldwide migration crisis. Following the world premiere on-site, the video will be available on Vimeo at 1:30pm PST at https://vimeo.com/130879547 for viewing and free global online sharing.

After six years of work on migrants’ rights at the U.S.-Mexico border through the multimedia project “Who is Dayani Cristal?” (@whoisdayanicristal), the producing team Marc Silver and Lina Srivastava have broadened their activities to work on stories and action concerning the worldwide migration crisis, beginning with migrants in the Mediterranean.

The situation for migrants around the world is just getting worse and it's devastating how we globally are standing back,” said Lina Srivastava. “In expanding our work on migrant rights from the U.S. to the Mediterranean, the first question Marc and I are asking is: Why is the world looking away? We are excited to premiere our short at Netroots because it is uniquely poised to help focus attention on the connections between migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border to others across the world."

The video launches only a few weeks after the United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees reported that nearly 59.5 million people are now displaced by wars, conflict and persecution across the world. A decade ago, this number was estimated to be 37.5 million.

"For an age of unprecedented mass displacement, we need an unprecedented humanitarian response and a renewed global commitment to tolerance and protection for people fleeing conflict and persecution," said UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres said in regards to the report.

Netroots Nation will attract more than 3,000 progressive activists. This year, the conference is focusing on immigration. The video short will be shown as part of a panel presentation at 1:00pm in Room 223 in the Phoenix Convention Center. Producer Lina Srivastava and Robin Reineke (@robinreineke) of the Colibri Center for Human Rights (@colibricenter) will do a post-screening Q+A.
