Day Two Recap From The Markup Of The Immigration Reform Bill

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday continued consideration of the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act.
The markup began at 10:00 a.m., and concluded at 5:10 p.m.
During Tuesday’s session a total of 38 amendments were considered by the Committee, including one substitute amendments and eight second- and third-degree amendments.
Nearly half the amendments considered were offered by Republicans.
Of the 38 amendments considered, 24 were accepted, all but one with bipartisan support.

House Judiciary Committee Introduces Bill to Expand E-Verify

Washington, D.C. – House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) today joined Congressman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) in introducing the Legal Workforce Act (H.R. 1772) a bipartisan bill that will discourage illegal immigration by ensuring jobs are only made available to those authorized to work in the U.S. The Legal Workforce Act is one of several bills the House Judiciary Committee plans to introduce to help address various issues within our immigration system.  Read more >

'Illegal immigrant' no more

The AP Stylebook today is making some changes in how we describe people living in a country illegally.

Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Kathleen Carroll explains the thinking behind the decision:

The Stylebook no longer sanctions the term “illegal immigrant” or the use of “illegal” to describe a person. Instead, it tells users that “illegal” should describe only an action, such as living in or immigrating to a country illegally.
