Based on organizing and advocacy efforts
supporting immigrant and refugee rights from around
the U.S., the following are reports published by NNIRR
member organizations.
In Our
Own Backyard: A Community Report on Human Rights Abuses
in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley (2005) by the Valley
Movement for Human Rights (VMHR). (pdf)
This report reveals just how distant the ideals of the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights are from becoming
reality for the immigrant community along the South
Texas / Mexico border. Based on interviews conducted
during the Not One More Abuse! Campaign of the VMHR,
In Our Own Backyard tells of the lives of women, men,
and their families and the impact of the abuses that
they suffer as they struggle to meet their basic needs.
Focusing on seven areas of human rights abuses: Violations
of Workers’ Rights, Abuse of Authority, Violations
of Women’s Rights, Violations of Tenants’
Rights, Violations of the Right to Health and Healthcare,
Violations of the Right to Education, and Violations
of the Right to Public Services, In Our Own Backyard
contains statistical data, rights information, personal
testimonies, and the Valley Movement’s recommendations
to eliminate human rights abuses.

En Nuestra Propia Comunidad muestra qué tan lejos
está el anhelo de la Declaración Universal
de Derechos Humanos en convertirse en realidad para
la comunidad inmigrante que vive en el Sur de Texas
por la frontera con México. Basado en las entrevistas
realizadas a través de la Campaña ¡Ni
Un Abuso Más! del Movimiento del Valle, En Nuestra
Propia Comunidad cuenta la vida de hombres y mujeres
y sus familias y los abusos que sufren en sus luchas
diarias para satisfacer sus necesidades básicas.
Se enfoca en siete tipos de abusos de los derechos humanos:
Abusos Laborales, Abusos de Autoridad, Violaciones de
los Derechos de la Mujer, Violaciones de los Derechos
de los Inquilinos, Violaciones del Derecho a la Salud
y Atención Médica, Violaciones del Derecho
a la Educación y Violaciones del Derecho a los
Servicios Públicos. En Nuestra Propia Comunidad
contiene información estadística, información
sobre los derechos, testimonios personales y las recomendaciones
del Movimiento del Valle para terminar con los abusos
de los derechos humanos.
