The current struggle in Arizona opens the opportunity to understand that SB1070 was not born overnight, but rather the direct and intended result of border enforcement strategies, known as Operations Gatekeeper, Hold the Line, Rio Grande, and here in Arizona, Safeguard. Building an unprecedented military-type enforcement infrastructure, these strategies have intentionally funneled most migrants through Arizona’s southern border.

African Immigrants and Refugees in Europe: A PAN & BAJI investigation

Nunu Kidane, Director of Priority Africa Network and Gerald Lenoir, Director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration report from Italy and Greece on the plight of African refugees as they make their way to Europe to find work to support themselves and their families back home. Nunu and Gerald are also attending the Global Forum on Migration and Development and the People’s Global Action on Migration, Development and Human Rights, both in Athens. These reports will chronicle their impressions, conversations with migrants, and what they are learning.

The ACLU and Rights Working Group (RWG), released a report detailing the continued and widespread use of racial profiling by law enforcement agencies, the harassment and detention of thousands of people solely on the basis of religion, race or nationality, and its impact on millions of people in the African American, Asian, Latino, South Asian, Arab and Muslim communities. This report was submitted to the U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) on June 30, 2009.
